Harsh Economic Realities for Amercia's Families

Why is it that the groups who bear the most financial stress and hardship are families and the elderly?
Aren't these our two most precious Human assets? Our children, the America of tomorrow, the apples of our eyes. We all hold children dear, whether they are our own or someone else's. Even if we have no children, we know they are special, they need our support and protection through the most important developmental years. And our parents, those who raised us, supported us, nurtured us, and taught us. Senior citizens are our living repository of practical experience and wisdom.
But, how are these groups treated by society?
At least 65% of American children live in households with an almost unbearable amount of financial tension and stress. They have to do without things, like new clothes, really healthy whole foods, medical insurance, and worst of all, their parents' attention because parents must work long, draining hours just to provide food and shelter for their families. We can only hope parents don't get hurt or sick, because their little children could be out on the street before they know it!
Many retired people are having to face a harsh reality. After being told they must work a job for 40 years, to provide for their old age, they are now finding that there is no security in old age, no matter how hard they've worked or how long they've stayed with a particular company. Forced early retirement, bankrupt pension plans, social security benefits that aren't enough to live on, and sky high medical costs make old age even more treacherous than famlihood, because it's much harder for retirees to find decent work due to the limitations of age and also, age discrimination.
This is not right and something must be done about it immediately!
We get a lot of lip service from government and corporations about how they care. They care about children. They care about families. They care about senior citizens. But, do they really? Based on results, children, families and seniors can only say, "Yeah, right!"
Look at our politicians, hard at work in Washington making sure that the richest 10% of Americans get tax breaks, giving juicy government contracts to their fat cat buddies and trying to enforce an ideology that has no place in a government devoted to the separation of church and state. They have slashed, crippled or mismanaged every social program designed to help families and senior citizens. They don't have any plans to address the health care crisis in America because their pharmaceutical buddies really like things the way they are. Even victims of overwhelming natural disaster don't seem to rate timely government assistance. Our government today seems to be sending a very clear message, "If you don't have money, you're on your own."
Corporations smile at us through media and public relations agents while, behind the scenes, they downsize or mismanage pension plans. "Oops! Sorry. There's just no money left for you." But, the corporate managers have all been paid, and in many cases, each one has been paid enough to sustain 5 families or more! Is it really necessary to have such a disparity between executive and worker salaries? Who works harder?
Whatever our purpose in life, I KNOW we were not created to spend our lives consumed with working and worrying about money. No religion on Earth preaches that making money is the most important thing in life. Rather, they try to impress on us how important people and relationships are. It is love, fostered through correct action that makes life worth living. This is a spiritual concept that transcends religion, because people from every religion would agree, people are more important than money.
So, how did we end up with a system like this?
Lack is a very powerful and motivating condition. Many who have come from meager beginnings never want to endure it ever again. Many who have money are so afraid of losing it that they will go to any lengths to keep it all for themselves. It really does amount to fear, whether you have money or not. That is how this money based state of affairs arises and that is how it stays in effect.
What can we do about it?
I know. This system has been around for so long that it's hard imagine life any other way, but that is exactly where we must start. Try it now. Can you imagine what life would be like for you if you weren't worried about money? What would you do? Where would you live? What would your home be like, your clothes? What would your stress level be like? You'd be far more relaxed. Go on, imagine it now. Take a deep breath and let it out feeling as if you didn't have a financial care in the world.
Now imagine what other people would be like if they didn't have to worry about money. They'd be less rude. They'd smile more. You'd hear less yelling amidst your neighbors or even from your own family. Children would be raised by people who could actually focus on them for more time everyday, which means the adults of tomorrow would be calmer. They'd have fewer "issues" and hang-ups because they would grow up feeling they were the most important thing in their parents' lives, fostering greater self esteem.
This is only the first step, but it's very important. Our focus determines our reality. Thoughts become things. If you can't imagine a better world, you'll never realize it. We need everyone's participation here.
Act with compassion and integrity
I'll never understand why people with wealth don't seem grateful to the people who made it happen. Behind every million dollar corporation, there are thousands of employees and customers, without whom there would be no business. Those who have wealth, have it by the grace of all. No one can make money all by themselves and if you don't believe me, try going into a room alone (with no money press, phone, fax or Internet ready computer) and see just how much money you can make without anyone else.
Every person in America is rich compared to others around the world. Be grateful for it. Those who can afford to give to others without starving, should! Tithing has even been shown to be one of the fastest way to wealth. Give 10% of your income to others freely and it will come back to you many times over.
Vote!
I can't say enough how important it is to pay close attention to politics on every level. I know, it's boring, but I am shocked at how far removed our current administration is from the common man. How did it happen? It didn't happen over night. The very politicians in office today have long shown their stripes of greed and corruption, but people voted for them anyway! They certainly have lots of friends and very slick public faces, but anyone who bothered to look at their records could have seen this situation coming before these guys were elected to more important offices.
Acting on the recommendations of others (be they teachers, parents, priests, co-workers, whatever,) may seem much easier that researching candidates for yourself, but look where it's gotten us. We must take our responsibilities to choose our leaders and vote much more seriously.

Is Your Building Society Worried You Will Be Made Redundant?

Homebuyers with spotless credit records are being warned that they could find it difficult to take out a new mortgage as banks continue to tighten their lending criteria. Banks and building societies are rejecting loan applications at short notice as house prices continue to fall and they become increasingly jittery about the growing threat of unemployment.
Even borrowers with deals that have several years to run are not safe. Banks have been writing to homeowners to demand that loans are repaid in full within 30 days, long before the end of the mortgage term. Most mortgage contracts contain a clause that allows the lender to pull the plug on the agreement, even if the borrower is not in arrears.
In fact, legal experts say that the latest mortgage contracts are littered with vague and open-ended terms and conditions that allow lenders to do almost anything. For example, the conditions attached to a mortgage can be changed "for any valid reason", according to a contract from one leading lender.
One solicitor said: "Homeowners need to read the terms and conditions more carefully than ever before. It could be argued that a clause allowing lenders to withdraw credit with 30 days' notice is unreasonable, but this has yet to be tested in a Court of Law."
The Prime Minister has been putting pressure on lenders to boost mortgage lending and reduce rates in line with the Bank of England base rate, but even state-owned lenders have refused. Last week Northern Rock said that it was passing on only half of the latest base-rate cut to its variable-rate mortgage customers - 0.25 per cent rather than the full half a percentage point.
Banks are struggling to source funding to offer new mortgages. Most banks now use retail deposits to fund lending, but low interest rates do not help banks and building societies to attract savers. This is the biggest problem facing lenders and the only thing they can do is to pick customers who pose the safest risk.
Against this difficult backdrop, experts say that banks are using any excuse to reject customers. If a lender suspects that a borrower has submitted an application with information that is not 100 per cent accurate, it is likely to be refused. A change in circumstances can also worry lenders. Banks are also examining the credit histories of new customers more closely than ever. Lenders have been known to reject applications because of missed mobile phone payments or because a borrower has been overdrawn on his or her bank account too frequently.
Lenders have also tightened the rules on income multiples. Many banks are unwilling to offer loans worth five or six times a borrower's salary, which was common during the boom times. Performance-related income, such as bonuses, is also now routinely excluded from affordability assessments. If a borrower secured a previous deal with high income multiples, banks will be wary of extending the same level of credit again.
There has also been no let-up for first-time buyers. One mortgage deal in four now requires a deposit or equity stake of 40 per cent, as lenders seek protection against falling house prices and the risk of negative equity.
Mortgages aimed at borrowers with smaller deposits are limited and considerably more expensive. The emphasis on low LTV lending means that falling house prices are also a headache for homeowners who need to remortgage.
A 150,000 pound mortgage on a home worth 200,000 pounds has an LTV ratio of 75 per cent, which is the maximum available now from a number of leading lenders. But if that home falls in price by 15 per cent, the same mortgage has an LTV ratio of 88 per cent.
There are ways to make yourself more attractive to lenders. Borrowers who do not need to remortgage or move house in the next year should pay off both capital and interest each month and overpay whenever possible. This will ensure that they have the maximum amount of equity possible when the time comes to take out a new deal. Some mortgage providers will charge a penalty for this, but most will allow borrowers to overpay by up to 10 per cent a year. This puts homeowners in a much stronger position.
You should order a copy of your credit record to check that all the information about you is correct. You can apply directly to the credit-reference agencies - Experian, Equifax and Callcredit - for your file.
After all it makes sense for borrowers to resolve any problems that would show up on a credit report by contacting the lender and clearing the debt.

As a guy, for years I didn't put much thought into the clothing I put on myself.
Most of us are worried about what the item feels like, or smells like, rather than how it looks on us.
Sure, we try and look nice when we go out to bars and clubs. Usually our wardrobe in these situations consist of a nice pair of jeans, some black shoes, and a button-up dress shirt.
And when we're not in a bar or club, we tend to dress in what's comfortable - which means ratty, beat-up jeans and that AC/DC shirt from high school.
What men don't understand, is that when it comes to making an impression on women, what you wear definitely counts! And it's not just what type of shirt you have on either, it's all your accessories too - the belt, the shoes, the watch, etc.
Realize that women spend a LOT of time and energy to look good. They are practically raised to be aware of fashion, from playing with their Barbi dolls as little girls, to helping their best friend get married, they are conditioned to the intricacies of what to wear.
So though us guys may not care what type of shoes we wear, girls - who spend lots of time and money on finding shoes to go with certain outfits - will.
Remember - when you go out, you're not dressing for yourself. You're dressing for the women you want to attract!
Here are some rules that, if followed, will allow you to look your best, no matter what situation you might end up in.

Obviously, this is a highly controversial topic, therefore it's important to set the record straight once and for all.
Just what are, exactly, DVD copying laws? The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) states that it is, in fact, illegal to break the CSS protection located on most DVD's. This DVD copy law doesn't specifically state, however, that it's illegal to make a personal, back up copy of a title already paid for an owned by the owner. This means that, according to these laws, just as long as you don't rip the original movie's coding, it's not necessarily illegal to make your own backup copy for personal use.
So how do you know whether or not you'll be ripping the original copy's coding? By reading reviews on DVD copying software and blank DVD products to ensure that every step you take will be legal. DVD copying laws also state that selling any copied movies or software is illegal, so you should never, ever do anything like that under any circumstance.

Breaking The Cycle To Stop Child Anxiety

As they grow up and get a taste of the ups and downs of life, children begin to worry about things. The older they get the more concerns they have, which, of course, is perfectly normal and shows that they are becoming more aware of the world around them. It's just another important part of the maturing process.
But what if your child's concern and worry seems far greater than you would expect? What if the simple act of attending school seems to cause panic in her? What if a short car journey seems to fill her with fear and make her feel sick? What if she seems depressed, or extremely shy when there is no obvious reason for it?
Your child could be suffering from a Child Anxiety Disorder.
The word "anxiety" does not immediately force parents to be as concerned as they should be. After all, the word anxious simply means apprehensive, worried, or uncertain. Child Anxiety Disorder is much more than her simply being worried about something. It is a condition that is has an extremely negative impact on the key aspects of your child's life. It is a deeply rooted mental condition that can have many symptoms and produce serious side-effects, and parents need to be sure that statements like, "She's just a worrier", are not glossing over a potentially very dangerous bigger issue.
We all have moments of anxiousness, moments where our bodies automatically react to something in a way that makes us feel uncertain, troubled, fearful, or nervous. As children we experienced anxiety when faced with a new challenge, or a new situation, or a trauma of some sort, but for some children this normal anxiousness has become something that their minds have somehow mistranslated. Maybe they weren't able subconsciously to attach a logical reason to a moment of anxiousness and their brain linked the worrying feeling to the wrong cause. The next time the child faces a similar situation her brain immediately sends a message that says, "This is something bad", and her body again reacts in a negative way. Nervousness, sweating, worrying, trembling, and a seemingly irrational fear of something that should not be anywhere near as troubling. The more anxious she feels the more her brain tells her body to react to it, and the mistranslating continues.
This cycle of anxiety continues, festering and growing until it begins to affect other aspects of her life. She might start to perform less adequately at school, she might refuse to leave the house, and her health may suffer greatly. It's vital not to underestimate the heavy burden that an over-anxious mind can have on a child's physical health. Thinking that your child will simply grow out of it could lead to her anxieties being carried into her adult life and having a hugely negative impact on her future.
It's very important for parents to learn what the signs of child anxiety are and intervene as soon as possible to prevent a deterioration in a child's health and overall wellbeing. Some signs of a child's anxiety disorder:
-Unusually nervous or fretful.
-Compulsive behavior like biting nails.
-Excessive bad moods or anger issues.
-Avoids social situations.
-Trouble concentrating.
-Seems overly eager to please.
-Headaches, stomach cramps, or other unexplained physical symptoms.
-Problems with sleep.
-Excessively self-critical.
-Needs constant reassurance.
-Self-harming behavior.
-Academic performance issues.
-Excessively tense and uptight.
-Low self-esteem and lack of confidence.
-Extremely fearful of failure.
The importance of knowing what to look for, staying aware, and being able to act if needed has to be stressed. You have to break the cycle in order to stop the anxiety. If you think that your child may be suffering from an anxiety disorder then carefully and sensitively talk it through with her. If you are still concerned then seek professional help as soon as possible. Therapy methods have proved to be very effective indeed, and early intervention is highly recommended. Introducing kids to a healthy lifestyle can be a challenge in our fast food, video game laden society. Thirty minutes once a week in P.E. class isn't nearly enough to maintain the cardiovascular system, much less keep an overall healthy bodyweight. One thing that P.E. class has right though is that classes are fun and they allow kids to socialize. So little Johnny's not thrilled about running 30 minutes on a treadmill? It's already hard enough for adults, who understand the importance, to exercise on a consistent basis.
